Start Ear TrainingAbout This Scale
Locrian mode is the 7th mode of the Major scale and the darkest of all seven modes. Its defining features are the minor 2nd (♭2) and diminished 5th (♭5), which make it inherently unstable — there's no stable tonic chord. In practice, it's rarely used as a standalone key, but it's essential for playing over diminished and half-diminished chords in jazz, and for creating extreme tension in metal. Dream Theater and Meshuggah use Locrian-based riffs for their most intense passages.
