About This Scale

Lydian mode is the 4th mode of the Major scale. It's identical to the Major scale except for its raised 4th (♯4), which creates a uniquely bright, ethereal, and "floating" quality. Steve Vai and Joe Satriani are perhaps the most famous advocates, using it to create their signature soaring, celestial guitar sounds. The ♯4 eliminates the only "avoid note" of the Major scale, making every note in the Lydian mode equally consonant. Film composer John Williams also uses it extensively for wonder and awe.
